juvenile corrections

The correction field today seems to keep growing with the get tough on crime personality that the police are taking now. They are taking all sorts of people to jails and prisons now even for small offenses. For instance, there are more juveniles in today than there ever where before. In 1995 there were around 7,800 juveniles that were being incarcerated. The goal of any justice system is to keep the people safe from delinquents and to rehabilitate them as well. However, many states do not have funding to do the rehabilitation programs that these kids need (Juvenile justice). The people who make these policies are not always able to get these programs into the facilities to achieve what they are supposed to, so the kids end up just sitting there waiting out their term. The places that do put the extra money into the programs that help rehabilitate the juveniles have been shown to decrease the juvenile offenses. However, these programs take time and money they do help. While the increase of juvenile incarceration facilities help keep our society safe while they are in there it is useless unless we try to make policies that try to give the juveniles a chance to get better or when they get out of the facilities they could go back to committing the offenses that got them there in the first place.
There are many different kinds of rehabilitation programs and they range anywhere from aggressive rehabilitation like boot camp, which teach kids the meaning of respecting authority, it teaches them useful skills that they could use in their everyday life like mechanics and also teaches them values. But then there are the less aggressive like the anger management meetings, drug rehabilitation. The list keeps going on, but all of these facilities do not do a thing if they are not being put through these programs that are proven to help.

IS CREATINE GOOD FOR THE BODY?

People want to have a body that everyone wants to look at and some will take supplements and drink protein drinks just to have what they think would be the perfect body. But are these supplements more harmful than helpful? However there are a lot of supplements and protein shakes out there but there is one that caught my attention when there was a news announcement on the internet. It said that the long term affects of these supplements could harm your body, one of these being creatine. However the research is still new on creatine researchers still say that it has the potential to cause some damage in the body. The University of Maryland says that creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid in the body that is produced by the liver, kidneys and pancreas. These creatine supplements help boost that production of creatine in peoples bodies, the catch is that not everyone’s body is the same. Some people already might have naturally occurring high creatine levels anyway therefore not getting any effects of the supplements. But some people who have regular or low levels of creatine are more apt to get the affects they desire. However they may get those effects of muscle building and muscle toning but if they use the supplement for too long the body thinks it does not to produce anymore of its own creatine because it realizes that it is getting it from an outside source so it cuts the production of its own. If the body goes too long with that outside source it will start to depend on that for its only source. This is only a few cases at which this occurrence happens because like I said before everyone body is different and reacts different to the things we put in our body, so I would advise people to be careful of what you put in your body; and if you want to use supplements you should probably consult a doctor as to which ones are reliable, most effective and least damaging.

Campous Life vs. Individual Morality

In Elisha Dov Hack’s essay College Life versus My Moral Code she explains how colleges, Yale in particular, are basically accepting the fact that single people having sex is ok. They have signs on campus telling where to get condoms and signs saying you don’t have to have sex in order to show affection why don’t you take a nap together or even a shower. These are things that thirty years ago would have been appalling to see in dorm rooms. College students now a day have to make decisions on where to go to college based on their morality instead of how good of an education they want. As mentioned in the essay Yale forces freshman and sophomores to stay those years in the dorms on campus forcing them to put their moral standards to the test. Students have enough stress as it is focusing on their studies and trying to get good grade so they can move on to something better, but now they have an added stress of sex, parties and other things like that to harm their moral standards.
There are some colleges that hold conference for the students and forces the students to go which say they are educating the students to have safe sex. These conferences are a joke, they are supposed to be trying to deter the activity instead they are saying that it is acceptable and inevitable, and then at the end of it they pass out condoms to the students.  Colleges seem to just want a reputation of “yeah that college was a good academic college but it also had great parties too” which is ridiculous; most colleges look past that and advertise their good academics and downplay the sex part of it all. The shocking fact is that colleges say it is ok for this stuff to happen so people think I can get what I want, which leads to a problem; if people think they can get what they want and then they don’t they get violent. Take the sex for example some guys get drunk try to hit on a girl and get angry when they get turned down, the shocking fact is that most unreported rapes happen on college campuses(95% of College…). So think about it if colleges did not allow sex and drinking so freely how would college life be? Personally I think it would a safer and better environment.

Is protien supplements good for your health?

Protein drinks have been portrayed as one of the best ways to get the best looking bodies you could ever have, and get them fast. Is that really true? Do they really help you that much, or do they hurt your health? There have been some claims that some protein drinks such as muscle milk and Eas Myoplex contain certain metals like arsenic, cadmium, and even lead. However these are not dangerous in the low levels you find them in protein drinks, but the concern is that they could be toxic with constant and consistent use. On the early show on CBS they had a reporter go into stores that sold protein drinks and asked them “So if I were to use a protein drink or a different supplement are there any possible health risks that I should be aware of no matter how small?” Each one of the sales men answered that there are no health risks at all that you need to worry about, that these protein drinks are one of the healthiest and quickest ways to get buff.
The protein suppliers say that their products meet the nation’s health requirements even if people consume more than three servings a day. However, the writer from consumer reports magazine beg to differ, they say that if consumed more than recommended serving or even the recommended servings for a long period of time could cause health problems like, osteoporosis, digestive tract problems, and for some people could cause kidney problems.
So if all of these problems are caused by consistent and long term use of these protein drinks is it really worth the risk to look buff, and is there other ways to get the lean body look without the risks? There are ways you could get the same amount of protein for a cheaper price and without the health risks. CBS’s early show said that one way is to eat common everyday foods like a half a chicken breast which contains 27 grams of protein and costs 62 cents per serving, or drink three glasses of whole milk which has 23 grams of protein and costs 60 cents per serving, or eat three scrambled eggs which contains 20 grams of protein and costs 46 cents per serving. So there are other ways to get the protein you need for building muscle without the risks.
